Why Drop In?

You’re on the road.  You’re busy.  There’s lots on your mind.  So, why spend time to drop in?
There’s plenty of reasons.  Not the least of which is it will help you both physically and mentally, thereby increasing your opportunities for success.  It’s not easy being on the road, work the whole day and then work more in your hotel room at night.  Lots of times the work we would have otherwise done in the office piles up, leaving us with little choice but to work in our hotel room at night.  While you want to keep on top of things, it’s just plain unhealthy for your body, mind and spirit taking the all work and no play approach.  It’s a different kind of stimulus.

I get it.  It’s easy to get cooped up in the hotel with your work; a personal size pizza and the TV as your only company.  But what if you got out there and spent just a little time doing something for yourself?  From personal experience, I can tell you there’s tangible payback.  Let’s count the ways.

  1. Consistency – Movement is very important.  I can bet you know what it feels like to go out on a week-long road trip, not working out and changing your eating habits only to come back, work out and feel like you’re almost starting from square one.  Not fun.Or worse, you get back from a trip and because you’re out of the groove, you don’t want to go back to it.Even if you can get one workout in a week while on the road, you can help to maintain that consistency of keeping your body moving and it’s that much easier getting back into it once you get back home.
  2. Connecting with People in a Non-Work Capacity - Getting out among people is important for your mental health.  It can get monotonous when travelling for business.  Do your work,   communicate on a professional level, come back to the hotel and that’s it.  Although it can be difficult to go out on your own to interact with others in a strange town, dropping-in gives you instant common ground with others.  I’ve met some amazing people at my drop-ins and, although there is that initial unfamiliarity going in, I consistently feel so much better that I’ve gone.
  3. Dropping in Can Help with Nutritional Consistency -  I’ve found that that if I stay more disciplined about my workouts while travelling, I also maintain better eating choices.  Working out changes my mindset and allows me to better focus on my goal at home.
  4. Body, Spirit and Mind - Clearing you mind is ultimately going to help you do a better job.  Whether I’m home or on the road, taking a class always allows me to have an hour where there’s nothing but me and the workout.  Dropping in is an opportunity to reset and take your mind off the stresses of work and being on the road.  And even though the workout can challenge be challanging, I have always found that I am more mentally fresh when I get back to my work, creating a better result for everyone.

What about if you’re on vacation?  It’s a great idea to drop in if you can while on vacation.  There’s lots of reasons.  But that’s a topic for another day.

Wishing you safe, healthy and successful travels.

What MATTERs MOST

Being an object in motion. Humans are like sharks. If we stop moving we die. Whether it's physically moving at a gym or a hike, or mentally moving forward, movement is where we find ourselves. I started the drop-in diary to share some of the ways I've found to keep moving in a positive direction. I hope it helps.
